My students are mostly former ELLs who still struggle with getting through a text, but enjoy the challenge! I think this book is very good. Even though Maniac's plan is not totally successful, it paves the way for better relations along Hector Street.
Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan take Maniac into their house after his parents' deaths but the way they live buying two of everything so they won't have to speak to one another at all forces Jeffery to run away. Amanda Beale carries all of her books — her prized possessions — with her at all times in a suitcase so they will not be ruined by her younger siblings or dog.
It's a fun book that any child can relate to and it was one of my personal favorites growing up. Eight years of that. I want to help them start their own libraries and I know that this book will give them the necessary experiences to grow as readers and as people.
